Chasing the Dream

From Plan to Reality

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore! Dream! Discover!” ~ Mark Twain

Even though Nate and I dreamed of one day living in the Caribbean, we did not get serious about it until 2018.  We sat down and wrote out a timeline of goals that we needed to accomplish to make this dream a reality.  These goals included things like remodeling and paying off our house, paying for Nate’s graduate classes, when and where to go to sailing school, and when to start shopping for a boat.  We plan to learn to sail on Lake Michigan so once Nate retires in 2028 we can sail all over the Caribbean.  We definitely want to sail to the USVI and BVI but also hope to get to the Southern Caribbean to visit islands like Grenada and St. Kitts.  We are undecided right now about where to live during hurricane season and whether to have a house or a condo, but luckily those decisions aren’t on our timeline for several more years.  In the meantime, we enjoy watching and learning from other sailing couples on YouTube and researching several different sailboat models and prices.  We will be documenting our goals and step-by-step decision making in detail in our blog. Follow along with us as we chase our dream.
